I would lean towards Keyes being anti-government/ anti-establishment for being a reason for getting out. A kid was a decent excuse in the moment

He said he’s goal was to ”stay under the radar”.

That would somewhat fit with what we know of his political beliefs, although he is inconsistent there, too.

I just wanted to express my thanks to you for your content. I had heard of Keyes but had no idea of the depths of his character and the level of sadistic depravity he possessed until I started watching your channel. But regarding the 'mask' point, don't you think this is entirely consistent with how Keyes himself describes who he is? He has to put on a mask as he's aware that his true character is too evil to exist openly in the world. We see that laid out explicitly in his FBI interviews which are truly fascinating. The hidden caches of guns and the hidden bodies are comparable with his hidden true self. Who he really was emerged only at flash points in his life - the murders, the rapes, the animal cruelty and finally - the FBI interviews. And it seemed like this was starting to surface more and more driving him to carry out his despicable acts with less planning. RIP to all his victims, the way they suffered is too harrowing for words.

With the understanding that we're open to being wrong, I think that any level of self awareness Keyes had was superficial at best.

By definition, disordered personalities are disintegrated, meaning without internal consistency, and it is believed that this is largely hidden from them by the same pathological process that creates the discrepancy.

The lack of meaningful introspection is one of the defining traits of both narcissistic and psychopathic personalities. They also tend to be impulsive, and we see this reflected in Keyes often capricious decision making.

Keyes really was no one - there is no integrated self concept of any consistency. There were many Keyes - he was whatever was most convenient to him at any given moment.

This is common to the type, and we discuss it in some detail in our article on the psychopathology of the criminal mind, which you can find here: https://www.crimecult.com/p/psychopathology-of-the-criminal-mind

How intentional their masks may be is an open and debated question. It has been since Cleckley first coined the concept. It seems likely that there is a spectrum to this - some are more aware, and some less - although even those who are more aware likely have a superficiality to their awareness. The mask is as much about hiding who they are from themselves as it is hiding who they are from the world.
