In the article featuring Keyes arrest footage, we mentioned that it may be the only time we see the real Israel Keyes, stripped of his mask of sanity - insecure, nervous, and afraid.

We also mentioned that, hours later when the Rangers begin interrogating him around 3:00 PM, his mask has returned. Despite this, you can hear that he’s still nervous.

In the accompanying video footage of him waiting for the interview, you can see it. He moves his fingers, hands, and feet repetitively, attempting to regulate these feelings.

There are moments where his mask slips again but only briefly; these moments are easy to pick out by listening to his voice. They are the moments where he his voice sounds quiet and defeated.

Towards the end, you can hear this intonation change; the Ranger notices, too. It’s when he tells Keyes that they won’t be releasing his name to the media. Keyes sounds almost chipper when he replies “Alright!”

After explaining that it’s only to protect the integrity of the investigation, Texas Ranger Steve Rayburn notes wryly, “I know that’s okay with you.”
