You Can't Say That About Casey Anthony
We put together this satirical commentary after seeing the brave souls who put their futures at risk in response to Casey Anthony re-emerging into the public eye as a would be influencer and legal advocate.
For her part, Anthony seemed eager to remind people that she could potentially leverage the legal system as a form of foolproof suffocation to steal the air from reminders that two out of every three Americans believe Anthony either definitely or probably killed her two year old daughter, including the Judge who presided over her trial, Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr.
Perry told WFTV in 2017 that he believes Anthony killed her daughter accidentally after using too much chloroform in an attempt to knock her out. It's unclear why the judge believes that it was “most logical” that it was an accident.
We find Anthony’s admonition to “educate yourself before you implicate yourself” ironic, given the implication of investigators missing some of the most damning evidence in the case…
Also ironic that she misspelled libel as “liable,” as in the sentence, “Casey Anthony was never found liable for the murder of two year old Caylee Anthony.”
Another irony: in defamation cases involving public figures such as would-be influencer and legal advocate Casey Anthony in all her notoriety, the legal standard to prove defamation is significantly higher than for private individuals, requiring the public figure to demonstrate that the statement was made with "actual malice" – meaning the speaker knew their statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
Our own satirical comments were inspired by two brilliant and dearly missed comedians. Norm Macdonald, perhaps best remembered for the indefatigable skewering of OJ Simpson that got him fired from Saturday Night Live. The case against Casey Anthony has often been compared to the case against OJ as a result of their mutual acquittals and the media circus surrounding both trials.
